PLANTAR FASCIITIS
What is Plantar Fasciitis
The plantar fascia is a thick ligament like structure underneath the foot, running from the heel right to the toe. It forms the arch of your foot, making it crucial to the function of your foot. Plantar fasciitis refers to degeneration and inflammation of the plantar fascia, and causes heel and arch pain that can become extremely severe.
Heel pain is the single most common injury that we see at the International Heel Pain Institute. At our specialist clinic alone, we typically see about 50 cases per day of heel pain commonly labelled plantar fasciitis. This condition is clearly extremely common affecting 1 in 10 people, but that doesn’t make it any less of a serious problem.
This nasty condition needs swift treatment, especially since a recent study in 2018 has shown that 80.5% of plantar fasciitis sufferers still had it after one year 50% after five years – and more than 45% still had it after ten! Nobody wants to be in pain for the next decade, so addressing it immediately is a must.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis
- Sharp pain or dull ache in the heel
- Stabbing pain or dull ache in the arch of the foot
- Pain that is worse in the morning
- Pain when getting out of bed or chair
- Tenderness in the affected area

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis
- Overuse or Repetitive Strain: daily or work activities or sports that involve walking, running and jumping can place increased stress on the plantar fascia
- Flat Feet: flat feet can cause an abnormal gait making your foot susceptible to this condition
- Age: typically affect 30-60 years as the plantar fascia becomes less flexible
- Weight: excess weight puts extra pressure on the plantar fascia
- Pregnancy: changes in the body such as weight gain, hormonal changes and swelling add load to the plantar fascia
- Poor footwear: shoes that do not provide the correct support and/or cushioning may contribute to plantar fasciitis
