What is Achilles Tendinopathy

The Achille Tendon is your body’s largest tendon.  It connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It is crucial to the function of your foot, particularly pushing off and forward. Achilles Tendinopathy refers to degeneration and inflammation of the Achilles Tendinopathy refers to pain that can be in the tendon itself or on the back of the heel bone.

Symptoms of Achilles Tendinopathy

  • Sharp pain or dull ache in the back of the ankle or back of the heel   
  • Tightness that is worse in the morning 
  • Stiff pain when getting out of bed or chair 
  • Thickening, swelling and tenderness in the affected area 
  • Pain that worsens the longer you stand or walk 

What Causes Achilles Tendinopathy:

  • Rapid Increase or Overuse in Activity Levels:  daily or work activities or sports that involve walking, running and jumping can place increased stress on the Achilles Tendon 
  • Tight and Weak Muscles:  if the calf is tight or weak, it places additional stress on the tendon making it more susceptible to injury 
  • Flat Feet:  flat feet can cause an abnormal gait making your Achilles Tendon susceptible to this condition 
  • Age:  typically affect 30-60 years as the plantar fascia becomes less flexible 
  • Sudden Injury or Trauma:  pushing off forcefully can lead to a partial or full tear of the Achilles Tendon 
  • Poor footwear:  shoes that do not provide the correct support and/or cushioning may contribute to plantar fasciitis
